چکیده

Milan et al. (2001) identified a class of narrow, slow-moving HF radar backscatter echoes which originate between altitudes of 80 and 100 km, the ionospheric Dand lower E-regions. These echoes appeared to be associated with the occurrence of pulsating aurora, which are known to be created by energetic electrons capable of penetrating to D region altitudes. In this study we show that these echoes are observed in tandem with enhancements in cosmic noise absorption (auroral absorption), additional evidence that energetic (>30 keV) particle precipitation is responsible for generating the irregularities from which a radar can scatter. In addition, we show that the D region backscatter echoes occur predominantly in the post-midnight sector during substorm recovery phase, in common with auroral absorption events and pulsating aurora.

The spectral characteristics of E-region radar echoes co-located with and adjacent to visual auroral arcs

Simultaneous all-sky camera and HF radar observations of the visual and E-region radar aurora in the westward electrojet suggest a close relationship between a pair of parallel east-west-aligned auroral arcs, separated by∼30 km, and a region of strong radar backscatter. Poleward of this a broader region of radar backscatter is observed, though the spectral characteristics of the echoes in these...

D- and E-region effects in the auroral zone during a moderately active 24-h period in July 2005

The effects of energetic electron precipitation into the auroral region at a time of enhanced solar wind have been investigated during a continuous period of 24 h, using the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) radar, an imaging riometer, and particle measurements on an orbiting satellite. The relative effects in the E region (120 km) and D region (90 km) are found to vary during the day, consi...

The UV aurora and ionospheric flows during flux transfer events

Far Ultra Violet (FUV) signatures in the polar ionosphere during a period of magnetopause reconnection are compared with ionospheric flows measured in the cusp ‘throat’ and dusk cell by the CUTLASS Hankasalmi HF radar. Regions of peak FUV emission in the 130.4 nm and 135.6 nm range, observed by the Polar spacecraft’s VIS Earth Camera, consistently lie at the turning point of the flows from the ...

Multi-frequency observations of E-region HF radar aurora

Multi-frequency observations of E-region coherent backscatter from decametre waves reveal that auroral echoes tend to comprise two spectral components superimposed, one at low Doppler shifts, below 250 m s−1, and the other Doppler shifted to near the ion-acoustic speed or above, up to 800 m s−1. The low Doppler shift component occurs at all look directions; Doppler shifts near the ion acoustic ...

Are variations in PMSE intensity affected by energetic particle precipitation?

The correlation between variations in Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) and variations in energetic particle precipitation is examined. PMSE were observed by the Esrange VHF MST Radar (ESRAD) at 6753 N, 2106 E. The 30 MHz riometer in Abisko (6824 N, 1854 E) registered radio wave absorption caused by ionization changes in response to energetic particle precipitation. The relationship between...
